During the nearly 50 years of the Communistic regime, the Romanian Orthodox believers of Mediaş had only two churches (the town having a population of about 50,000 inhabitants, most of them being orthodox). After the year 1989 one of those two churches was taken by the Greek-Catholics, so there arose the need of building a new church. Within a meeting of the orthodox priests of Mediaş, the conclusion was reached that other 4 churches would be necessary. The local authorities considered the proposal justified, and they allotted the necessary grounds for the new constructions. Bearing in mind the believers' needs, the population density and the material possibilities they reached the conclusion that it would be proper to start building two churches in the neighbourhoods with more people (Vitrometan and Gura Câmpului), giving the believers the possibility to contribute with money for the urgent ones, while the other two churches would be constructed when the first ones functioned.
Almost 8 years (1990 - 1998) all the believers of Mediaş were invited to contribute with money for the construction of the first two churches of the town. In the year 1998 the project for the church with the patron Sf Dumitru started. The land on which the construction started is within the Parish of Mediaş Cathedral II, so that the responsibilities for the construction of this house of God were given to the priest Dumitru Cărăbaş, the vicar of this neighborhood. The settlement study was favorably approved in the autumn of the year 1996, after which the registration formalities were accomplished, and the working out of the documentation started together with the permission from the competent forums. The construction authorization was issued by the Town Hall of Mediaş on May 7, 1998 (no.151) The sanctification of the place took place on July 5, 1998 by reverend Răşinăreanu, substitute of Dr. Antonie Plămădeală, Metropolitan of Transylvania In order to start the work, companies were searched for, but most of them were interested only in how much money the parish owns. An offer was made by S.C. CON BRIO SRL, Mediaş, and another one from S.C. PROEXCOM S.A., Copşa Mică. The latter was chosen.
On June 28, 1999 the first poles were placed for the marking of the fundament, and on the next days concrete was poured. During the year 1999 the value of the work was of 85 million lei, in 2000 of 179 million lei, and in 2001 of 280 million lei. During the year 2002 the foundation was filled, the floor concrete was poured, and some of the poles were erected, between which brick will be laid. In 2003 the rest of the poles were erected (their thickness being of 60 x 50 cm, and their height 7.40 m), the insulation was made, on October 21 the first bricks were laid and by the end of the year the brickwork was done until the height of 7.40 m, the thickness of the walls being of 45 cm. The works during the year 2003 cost 207 million lei.
In the year 2004 the reinforcing steel corbel was done at the basis of the towers and the porter, which represents the guard fence from the balcony of the chorus. The concrete for the balcony platen and the one from the tower basis, the concrete poles, and the brickwork (30 cubic meters of brick) at the first level of the towers were poured together with the concrete platen from above this level. The cost of the works during 2004 was 586 million lei. On January 10, 2005 the works were resumed. The concrete from the stairs of the two side towers was poured, where the entrance to the chorus's balcony is situated, the framework of reinforced steel was lifted by crane, the casings were made and the reinforced steel for the second level of the inner stares of the side towers was produced. On February 17, as the weather was good, the concrete was poured at the second level of the three towers, and on March 15 at the second level of the inner stares of the side towers. On March 16 the remonates started to be built, which were for the arch between the towers and the cupola, having a radius of 8 meters. Above the cupola there are resistance arches - reverse girders - each of them containing 10 sticks of reinforced steel PC of 20 mm. The concrete of the first arch towards the towers was poured on March 30. At the beginning of the moth of April the brick work was finished at the second floor of the three towers - still united, both in the interior and in the exterior.
The wood for the scaffold for the whole concrete was received from the forest department, which was needed both at the arches and the central cupola. At the end of April the reinforcing of the steel was finished and the concrete was poured at the beams and the concrete plate over the second level of the three towers. The concrete, which was prepared at the station and which received a quality certificate, was lifted by the crane in a bucket of 1 cubic meter, and after being poured into the casings, it was set with the electric vibrator. The tabanes were also poured at the altar and the deacon's place. On May 18 the concrete at the belt over the altar's walls was poured and after the scaffold and the casing were finished the arch of the altar was also poured. In June the works started from the third level of the three towers. The towers separate one form another at this level, a bigger one in the middle and two smaller ones at the sides. Three teams were working - one team of carpenters (9 workers), one team of bricklayers and one of ironworkers. The wall towards the church was lifted only until 1 meter high, thus being formed the railing for another balcony, this one within the interior of the three towers, in which 20 or even 30 people can stay. This was not settled in the project. If this will be proven to be not useful the brickwork can continue and the interior of the church can be closed at this level.
Towards the end of June the casings and the reinforcing were started for the four big arches - thickness 40 x 70 cm, the radius 8 meters, which supports the main cupola. Then the octagonal beam was built over those arches - the casings and the reinforcing, and on August 2 and 3 the concrete at the arches and this beam - 25 cubic meters was poured. On September 2 the concrete at the arch above the nave was poured, on September 28 the beam above the arch, which sustains the roof, at the pendants, the cornice next to the arch, after which, as long as the weather was fine, the works at the casings above the side apses continued. On December 15 the works for the year 2005 finished. All the works, also those in the year 2005, were performed by the company S.C. Proexcom S.A.; the sum of 2,195,164,100 ROL (219,516 RON) was paid and the VAT of 19% was returned. Most of this sum came from sponsoring, received from Romgaz S.A.; there were also sponsoring from Transgaz, Romexterra Bank and other companies, a donation form the USA, and the rest of donations from the believers. |
